Just to let you all know that Spirtual healing (balancing the body's energy) has been very helpful to me. I had 3 months of no pain or medication & it was free. Look up your local healer! Also acupuncture has been really good along with Chinese medicine.Alison

I have also found reflexology and aromatherapy (complete body massage) helpful too, but you really need to be able to have regular sessions - if you can afford them! It also better if you can have a home visit, or someone to drive you home afterwards, especially if you react strongly to the 'treatments'. I had an aromatherapy 'detoxification' session first time and a 'relaxation' session the second time, at home. They use different oils for different 'ailments'.  When I had the reflexology sessions, at a local alternative therapy clinic, I found it fascinating how they really can tell whereabouts you have health problms - the areas on the soles of my feet that correspond to the kidney and also sinuses (I often get sinusitis with hayfever in summer and colds in the winter) were extremely tender! In fact, at the time, my left kidney had been 'playing up' and during the first of two fortnightly sessions, I couldn't bear her to touch the left kidney point!

Unlike Alison, I didn't get any particular pain relief from the sessions, but a wonderful feeling of calmness and found them extremely 'up lifting' and the feelings lasted for quite some time afterwards which was lovely. I think any alterntive therapy is worth a try and even if you just get the calm, de stressed feelings, rather than any pain relief, they're well worth it.

I also found the warm and hot pools at a thermal spa extremely helpful. In fact the first time I went, i had no pain, or meds, for 12 hours! Unfortunately, the spas I visited were on the beautiful island of Ischia, in the Bay of Naples, Southern Italy, a bit too far to go for the odd day out! I think there are thermal spas here, in UK, but I don't know of any, personally.

So, go on, give an alternative therapy a try!

Helen xx

Helen, a thermal spa sounds wonderful!  Have tried to find a local one without success.  Apparently heat is wonderful for the kidney & I can never get anything hot enough.  Heat packs don't hold the heat well so I find hot water bottles best for lying on but then when the pain's bad I can't lie down anyway!  When I had acupuncture this week the therapist held a burning stick on the kidney needles so that the heat went further into my body than ever before.  It was brilliant.  On the way there every bump in the road hurt my kidneys and on the way back I had no pain at all & was able to sit through a 21/2 hour pantomime.  It was such fun - I hadn't laughed so much for ages & I loved the audience participation bits.  I shouted until I was hoarse which didn't take much doing as I have a croaky voice & chest infection.

I had reflexology & the lady said she had never flet kidney points like it!  It was lovely though.  There is also a treatment called Bowen & it's good for back pain but it's expensive.

I am sure you are right that these treatments are required regularly to have more of a lasting effect & of course that's not affordable.  I am hoping that if I get the DLA I will be able to pay for more treatments & a holiday.

Best wishes to everyone

Alison
