Hi everyone, It has been a very long time since I have posted on here. But I have not been doing the best, and just trying to make a living. Some of you know that I have been fighting with my insurance company to have a procedure called "Pulsed Radiofrequency Treatment" or PRF for short. It has been an over 2 year fight, and the insurance still denied me again, but I finally went ahead and had the procedure done last Wednesday (Nov. 29th). I had it done at OSU. Unfortunately, OSU got rid of their Pain Center and turned it into a Comprehensive Spine Center, but the doctor that performed the procedure told me he would keep me as a patient since I had already seen him before. Before I had the PRF done, he told me that he had done the PRF on 8 other LPHS patients. 5 of the 8 had some type of pain relief. He said that it would take up to a week to find out if the procedure worked at all. I must say the PRF is pretty darn painful to go through, but it has been a little over 3 days since then, and I am already feeling a difference. I have about a 2 minute period, about once a hour, where I have NO PAIN at all....the doctor said that it would start out gradual like that. Can you believe it??!! NO PAIN WHATSOEVER in the kidney!! Now I have had LPHS for over 10 years, and have tried everything under the sun to get rid of the pain, and nothing has helped. But if this does continue like I hope it will, and the pain keeps getting less and less, I will be so grateful that something finally worked for the pain. Having the PRF only helps for the pain associated with LPHS, it does NOT get rid of any other symptom, such as the blood in the urine, vomitting, etc. For me, I pass a lot of blood clots, and the doctor told me that even if I get down to having no pain in the kidney, that doesn't mean that when I pass a clot, that I won't feel the pain of it in the ureter or bladder, because I will. The PRF is only for getting rid of the kidney pain. But trust me, with how much kidney pain I am in, I will take whatever type of pain relief I can get. And the nice thing about the PRF is that it can be repeated. I just wanted to share this with everyone, and let you all know that yes, I finally had it done. Even though I had to pay for it myself. Thank God for payment plans because the PRF isn't cheap. Between $10,000 and $15,000. And the insurance company says the PRF is "experimental" so it won't pay at all, not one penny. But if it works, and I can get off all or most of my pain meds and get some type of quality of life back, that $15,000 will be a small price to pay. I will let everyone know how it turns out in about a week. I hope everyone is hanging in there and doing ok. I'm sorry that it has been so long since being on here last, but I rarely go on my computer anymore. I hope that everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and that you all have a wonderful holiday season. I will be thinking of you. If anyone has any questions about PRF, don't hesitate to ask them on here in this forum. I will be glad to answer them and try to help as much as I can. Good luck everyone.

Hi Jori,
I wondered where you had gone.
I hope this does work out for you as it will make you the first to come through this type of treatment within this group.
This is the microwave ablation that you posted about some time ago?
Did they go for the Kidney directly or at the spinal nodes like they do in the Spleniac and Celiac treatments?

I wish you all the best.
John

Hi John,

It's good to talk with you! I know I've been gone a long time. The LPHS has taken such a toll on me, that I rarely get on the computer anymore. I do still work, only because I have to, for the medical insurance. But yes, this is the same treatment that I have written about before. The only difference is that in regular RFA or radiofrequency ablation, they actually destroy the nerve by heating it with a microwave or thermal probe. I had the PRF or "Pulsed Radiofrequency" done where instead of destroying the nerve, they basically just stun the nerves. It is a lot less invasive and it can be repeated. The doctor said it would be considered a success if I am able to get off of 75 percent of my pain meds and if it lasted for 90 days or more. I will start going down on my pain meds next week. I can't believe that this is actually working! For the first time in over 10 years, I have had less pain in my kidney! The only down side, is that it doesn't work for any other symptoms of LPHS. So I still pass blood clots, have nausea, etc. But even if I can gain back some of my quality of life, it will be worth it. At least I hope so!

I hope you are doing ok....how is your wife doing? Keep fighting the good fight. And take care of yourself and your family.

Hello Reddvl31!

I was wondering if you had ever thought about doing the pain pump or if that has ever been an option to you? I am a patient at OSU as well but I see a different pain clinic.

I got a pain pump implanted in July 2006. I almost have complete relief and I am off of all of my oral medicines. The surgery really was not bad. I was down for about a week before I could get out of bed for a long period of time. The pump starts working immediately and when you are having pain you go to the doctor and they put a little battery pack over it and type in a dosage and it changes. The only pain is the surgery.

I have my days were I have alot of pain but I can go to the doctor and get an extra dose of medicine with out having to up my regular dosage. I am a big advocate on this subject. I have Lupus too and this is the first time since I can remember that I am having very little pain and have no oral meds. to take. It just has improved my quality of life and I would wish that upon anyone that has suffered like I have.

The surgery was covered by my insurance-United Health Care- without any hassle. My medicine refills are considered chemotherapy so they instantly cover that too! I believe the cost of the pump and the surgery  was $12,000. But this is something that does not have to be redone unless the battery runs out which is 5-10 years.

This may be a good option for you if your procedure you just had does not work. It only took me 3 months to reach my comfortable level. I am at 6 . 0 and the highest you can go is 300.0 ( Idon't know if it's mml's or what-I forget but I can get that info). No high's and low's or other side effects. It just takes care of the pain and not the disease like you were saying but it was so worth it!!!!!

If you would like some more info, anyone, I would be glad to talk to you. I just want people to have the same experience that I was able to have. You don't know how nice it has been to actually be able to do light chores again.

Happy Holidays and Pain Free Days!!!!!!

Tara/Tootsiewest
