As far as the auto transplant is concerned, you must understand what the surgeon is attempting. By relocating your kidney he will severe all of the nerve pathways for pain signals to travel. However, what ever anomalies occurring inside the kidney will continue but you will not feel the pain. In theory, this sounds like a good idea. But please remember, that as long no nerve regeneration takes place you will remain pain free. At the time of my wife's surgeries, we were advised that there was a 10% chance of recurrence but if you remained pain free for 2 years your were considered to be home safe. Unfortunately, after 5 years of pain free, the pain returned. Her nephrologist contacted her transplant surgeon and with more operations performed and more time passing, the recurrence rate is about 30-40% which is much too high and they have abounded the procedure. I do not mean to scare anyone, but only to give you information to make an informed decision. I would definitely ask you to request your surgeon what steps he will undertake not only to transplant your kidneys, remove all nerves but most importantly to prevent regeneration. Currently, after the recurrence 5 years ago, my wife is back on opioid therapy with limited success. In conclusion, to anyone who is considering this option, I highly recommend to have your doctors contact kidney transplant surgeons and to inquire into the reasoning as to why they no longer perform the procedure. Good Luck to All. My prayers are for you and your loved ones.
